Where and what did you study as an undergrad?   David: I originally hail from a small (less than 4,000 people) town in Wisconsin, and have spent most of my life within Wisconsin. My undergraduate major was in Operations Management at the University of Wisconsin – Whitewater. After graduation, I worked in the digital analytics space for 5 years with both Lands’ End (in Wisconsin) and Catalyst in Rochester, NY. Accepted: Which other programs did you consider when applying to b-school? Why did you choose Johnson? David: The primary thing I considered was fit – both personally and professionally. My approach was different than many; I didn’t have reach and safety schools, only schools I would love to go to – schools where I would have to think really hard about picking one over the other. I spent a lot of time making that list and only applied to and interviewed at HBS and Johnson. Johnson, for me, was a story about community. It was about a very tight knit group of people that would be my classmates from day one but my network for the rest of my life. It was a huge draw to hear that at any point in time, even after graduation, I would be able to reach out to a Johnson alum and they would make time to talk with me. I found many programs where that is not the case, or is only true while you’re in school. On a personal level, the people you meet are representative of the people you’re going to spend lots of time with. That means hours in the same room working on a presentation or grinding through a case. If you don’t feel a connection with the people, you’re not going to be happy with the program no matter where you go. It’s hard to think like that when you’re so focused on â€Å"best school possible† but don’t discount its importance. Finally, make sure you know what your target schools are known for and think about if those careers would be for you. A great tipoff is to see what the school talks about in its own materials. Johnson is strong in many areas, but does a killer job in marketing, finance, and consulting – the three areas I was interested in. A quick anecdote for you: I was at a conference and had the chance to talk with a CMO of a major company about my search (before I limited it to just 2) and I indicated my interest in marketing or finance and that I was looking at 5 schools. After I named off the schools, he looked at me and asked why I’d even consider 2 of the schools if that was my focus; he would never hire somebody for those roles from those two schools. I then stumbled my way through an answer to avoid saying â€Å"because they were ranked highly†. Clearly this is just a single experience, but it articulates a very valid point – rankings are not everything. Furtherm ore, rankings change, as evidence by Johnson’s new BusinessWeek rank of #7. Don’t over rely on rankings; there’s no story there. As a disclaimer, I did use rank to initially narrow my search, but after that it wasn’t my primary motivation. Accepted: If you could change one thing about Johnson, what would it be? David: If it could somehow be closer to major highways or airports, it would be a huge plus. But what I want to stress is that that is largely for personal travel reasons. I recruited across a variety of functions – marketing, finance, and consulting – and the major firms that you’d expect to see at a top 10 school all had on-campus recruiting events and interviews. Off campus recruiting takes a bit more effort – as it would at any campus, but even then Johnson has a strong presence at a various career fairs/conferences, including one they launched this year in a partnership with Darden and Tuck. Accepted: What is your favorite class so far? David: It is really hard to pick a favorite class since Johnson does such a good job of making sure each class builds on or pulls from the others, particularly with the first semester Core courses.   The faculty even meets on weekly basis to coordinate their lecture topics in terms of what current events to discuss across the various classes. If I had to pick one, I would say Operations with Vishal Gaur. He has a way of really bringing the whole class into a discussion of a case and I find the material very interesting (probably due to my undergraduate major in ops.). I would also encourage everybody at Johnson to take a class with Nate Peck, and I think anybody at Johnson will tell you the same. He’s fantastic at helping students bring focus to a case analysis at a rapid pace. Accepted: Are you involved in any clubs on campus? How central to student life is club involvement? David: The clubs at Johnson are very active, particularly clubs which are career focused. As the VP of Education for the Consulting Club, I’ll be responsible for working very closely with our Career Management Center on conducting all of the training for aspiring consultants in the Class of  2015. I’m also involved with Student Council as the Facilities Chair. Beyond professional clubs, there are a ton of lifestyle clubs organizing all sorts of trips, activities and competitions (chili cook-off!). It is very easy to get involved and it’s a great way to meet people. Interestingly, I would almost say that club roles, as it relates to student life, is less important than you might think because we’re such a close community. Many of the activities are posted all over the place and are open to anybody. In addition, we have a private Facebook page that people use to organize spur of the moment events. Accepted: Do you have an internship lined up for the summer? If so, what role did Johnson play in helping you secure that position? David: It is extremely exciting to say YES! I’m all set for my summer internship with Accenture Management Consulting in the strategy area. My situation was unique in that I was part of a team that won the internship by winning Accenture’s national case competition (read more!), but I can say that Johnson was a huge factor in our success. Johnson has such a good relationship with Accenture, and the other big consulting companies, which is how I had this opportunity in the first place. In addition, there were concepts we applied to our presentation which were a direct reflection of principles learned in just those first few weeks at school. That’s Johnson’s whole goal and our Immersion differentiation strategy – prepare you as fast as possible for success in your internship. Accepted: Can you share some application tips for our b-school applicants who are applying to Johnson? David: When you hear the advice of â€Å"be yourself,† it’s hard to know what that means. Still, it’s the feedback you’ll probably hear most often. My advice to you would be to think about what that means from the school’s perspective. When you interview, the school is trying to see if there is alignment between what you said on your application and how you are expressing yourself. Frado Our Nig Essay In Harriet E. Wilson’s only known work, Our Nig; Or, Sketches from the Life of a Free Black, I read about a young black girl who grows up as an indentured servant to a large Bellmont family. In the readings I read, the young girl has three names: Alfrado, Frado and Nig. In this essay, I’ll refer to her as Frado. Although Our Nig is an actual fictitious novel, our literature book only gives us three chapters. Each of these small chapters tells us a great story. In Chapter IV â€Å"A Friend for Nig†, we learn what Bellmont family members are Frado’s friends and what member despises her. Our readings didn’t start from the beginning of the novel, we didn’t get a proper introduction to the characters. Instead, you have to catch on as you read. Mrs. Bellmont is married to Mr. John Bellmont. They have four children: James, Jack, Jane, and Mary. Aunt Abby is Mr. Bellmont’s sister, but Mrs. Bellmont calls her Nab. Finally, the family dog is Fido. Confused? Well, I hope I got it right. Fido, the dog we know is a friend to Frado. He may not say anything, but he listens, and sometimes we just need a friend to listen. Mrs. Bellmont, on the other hand, we learn quickly, is very abusive to Frado. She orders Frado to get the smallest wood to keep the fire burning. Frado does what she is told, but Mrs. Bellmont still wants the wood smaller and orders her again. If Frado brought the smallest wood she could find the first t ime, every other piece of wood had to have been slightly bigger. Mrs. Bellmont couldn’t or didn’t want to understand this, so she kicked Frado repeatedly. The only reason she stopped kicking was because John and Aunt Abby walked in (2640). When they did, Frado got up and ran away from the house where no one could find her. The conversation between Aunt Abby and John after this incident was interesting. Draculas death Essay In Bram Strokers infamous novel, Dracula, he tries to explain the life of the undead, then continues to explain how to kill these creatures of the night. We find out that you must stab a vampire in the heart with a wooden stake, and then slash off their head. This is the only way that we are led to believe that you may be able to kill these undead. We learn this through Stokers vampire expert Van Helsing, he seems to be the most educated on the subject of the undead and creatures of the night, otherwise known as vampires. He explains to the rest of the posse, which consists of; Harker, Quincy, Dr. Seaward, and the Van Helsing, on how this feat must be done. But later, in one of the most mysterious parts of the novel, Draculas death, you are supposed to see another way to kill a creature if the night. Did Stoker make a mistake, or was this intentional? Due to these details I believe that Dracula merely shape shifted his way out of this predicament. This elite group is now searching to destroy Dracula. They first start with one of Draculas minions, Lucy. She had been introduced to Draculas dark side and was now a vampire. They went to her catacomb, when they found her they drove a wooden stake into her heart and soon followed it up with cutting her head off and filling their mouths with garlic. According to Van Helsing, this was the only known way to free Lucys soul into heaven. Dracula was not stabbed with a wooden stake, nor was he decapitated. These were all the ways that we were led to believe that was the way you were to kill a vampire. Draculas death left many questions unanswered. He turned into a pile of dust, which he could have merely shape shifted into. Minas marks had disappeared, Dracula was the head vampire he is sure to have special powers like; being able to turn into mist, fog, etc. , and Mina seemed to return to normal, just another power. As we went through the novel, Lucy needed to be decapitated and stabbed, and three female vampires at Draculas castle needed to be decapitated, to be killed. If all of these vampires, who were far less powerful than Dracula, had to be killed in this way, then why would it only take a simple Bowie knife to kill the lead vampire? This is the true mystery of the novel. I believe he Dracula has all these powers, why would it take much less to kill him? We have seen him turn into fog and what not, so how he could not turn into dust to escape is not unreasonable. He used his shape shifting powers to get out of another life threatening situation, and therefore is still alive when the novel ends. The novel is informative parts on how to kill a vampire. As the story progresses we see four vampires killed, and are left to question the fifth. The fifth being Dracula, which seems to merely shape shift his way out of the situation. Dracula being the most powerful vampire, being the head vampire dies in the weakest way. None of the previous approved methods were used for killing vampires, on how to kill a vampire. The principal vampire is killed in the simplest way: a single Bowie knife plunged into his heart. This is how you kill a common man, not the most powerful, head vampire. Deferred payment shares are issued to the investors in advance of payment. If the Kesser had issued its shares to Stanomat in advance of payment, Stanomat would be able to report and record the investment based on the 100 percent of shares it had received. If Stanomat records the investment in Kesser at the 55 percent level it would not be appropriate or practical to treat the purchase as a step acquisition. Falco acquired 10 percent voting common stock in an automotive store, Tidy Automotive, and in the same year acquired an additional 12 percent. Falco has a June 30 fiscal year and Tidy has a year end of October 31st. At year-end Falco Industries wanted to use the equity method to account for the investment in Tidy Automotive Stores. The market value of the investment in common stock on June 30th was 6 percent less that its acquisition cost. During the year Falco acquired a total of 22 percent of outstanding common stock in Tidy, which gives Falco between 20 and 50 percent of outstanding common stock, and therefore Falco’s interest in Tidy is significant. To account for this type of investment, Falco would need to use the equity method. The interest in Tidy would not be significant if Falco had acquired less that 20 percent, in this case Falco would need to use the cost method to account for the investment. If Falco had acquired more than 50 percent they would have to issue consolidated financial statements.

Clear Channel and the Cultural and Socio-Political Ramifications of Media Consolidation I.INTRODUCTION In 1996, Congress passed the Telecommunications Act thereby lifting restrictions on media ownership that had been in place for over sixty years (Moyers 2003; Bagdikian 2000: xviii). It was now possible for a single media company to own not just two radio stations in any given local market, but eight. On the national level, there was no longer any limit on the number of stations a company could own – the Act abandoned the previous nation-wide ownership cap of forty stations (20 FM and 20 AM). This â€Å"anti-regulatory sentiment in government† has continued and in 2004 the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approved a new rule that would allow corporations to own â€Å"45 percent of the media in a single market, up from [the] 35 percent† established by the 1996 Act (Croteau & Hoynes 2001: 30; AFL-CIO 2004). Companies can now also own both a newspaper and a television station in the same city (AFL-CIO 2004). This deregulation has led to a frenzied wave of mergers – most notably the Viacom/CBS merger in 1999, the largest in history (Croteau & Hoynes 2001: 21). Ownership of the media has rapidly consolidated into fewer and fewer hands as companies have moved to gobble up newspapers, television stations, and radio stations across the country.
